Station 6: Facilitator

Educators facilitate learning with technology to support student achievement of the ISTE Standards for Students. Educators:

6a: Foster a culture where students take ownership of their learning goals and outcomes in both independent and group settings.

6b: Manage the use of technology and student learning strategies in digital platforms, virtual environments, hands-on makerspaces or in the field.

6c: Create learning opportunities that challenge students to use a design process and computational thinking to innovate and solve problems.

6d: Model and nurture creativity and creative expression to communicate ideas, knowledge or connections.

Step 1 - Design a Solution

Problem

“We’re a mess,” bemoaned one teacher. “We need introduce our students to computational thinking but need a beginning level activity that will encourage them, not discourage. What wisdom can you share with our K-12 campus that wants to implement CT at each grade level?”

Project & Task

To get a feel for what computational thinking is, explore the micro:bit or Adafruit activity below and create some simple code to control it. Given time constraints, you may want to work on only ONE.

Record a video with your mobile device of your efforts, put it on OneDrive, Google Drive or YouTube, then share the link to it.

Step 2 - Explore and Create

NOTE: This is an actual physical station in the room. Get up and look for the Micro:bits and Adafruit your facilitator has placed in your room.

Darwin used to be the family pet until he sprouted legs and became one of the Wattersons. He’s innocent, naive and Gumball’s best friend. Make your own Darwin that will light up and make sounds when you shake him!

Supplies are available to make Darwin at this Station.

  1. Print or draw Darwin (copies should be available of this black-n-white)
  2. Cut out Darwin’s head and shoes
  3. Assemble Darwin
  4. Color Darwin
  5. Attach the Adafruit Circuit Playground Express
  6. Attach the Battery pack (or just plug into your computer as a power source)
  7. Code Darwin (follow the instructions)

8. Copy your MakeCode to your Adafruit (you may need to get the Driver)

Step 3 - Share
